League City is located southeast of Houston. Drivers traveling down I-45 will go through League City on their way to Galveston, although they may be intending to stay at one of the waterside resorts that League City has become known for.

A popular area for Karankawa Indians before white settlers arrived, League City was first established as a town when George W. Butler, from Louisiana, arrived in 1873. There was a bit of contention about the name after some other settlers arrived in the area. Butler and the new residents fought back and forth about what to call the town. At times it was known as Clear Creek, then League City, before League City was finally settled on.
